WALL, NJ – The Wall Township School District recently hired several new teachers to help alleviate staffing issues within the district amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Eight new teachers were recently approved to join the district, with six slated to teach at the all-virtual elementary school and two set to teach at Central Elementary School, according to meeting documents. 19 staffers were also approved leaves of absence due to child care and medical reasons, alongside one resignation.
According to Superintendent Dr. Tracy Handerhan, the eight hires are not the only educators slated to teach the all-virtual school: “The all-virtual teachers are a combination of seasoned teachers, of Wall Township teachers, and new hires,” the superintendent said.
The special meeting held on Sept. 10 also saw three new support staff hires, as well as the hiring of one new substitute teacher at the elementary school level.
“Typically, appointments like this are usually done in August right before school starts. In my seven years on the board, we’ve always had last-minute hires, but as everyone knows, this year is very unique because we are essentially running a separate virtual school,” Board President Ralph Addonizio said. “Certainly a lot of hard work went into that, and so I want to thank the administration.”
Wall Township Schools reopened on Sept. 16 (delayed from its initial reopening date of Sept. 8) with students operating on either a hybrid schedule or an all-virtual schedule. According to the district website, the virtual school is a hybrid model of asynchronous learning and live instruction.
The reopening delay comes amid statewide teacher staffing concerns, with many schools experiencing difficulty finding sufficient teachers to conduct classes. Neighboring Freehold Regional High School District announced in August that it will be having all students attend school remotely due to approximately 250 staffers requesting leave or accommodations. According to Wall Township Schools’ website, several positions are still open in the district, including bus drivers, paraprofessionals, per diem substitute teachers, elementary leave replacements.
