Esther Hammer, 86, wins state adult ed volunteer of the year award

AUBURNDALE – Esther Hammer, 86, and her husband, Dr. Wray Hammer, began volunteering at the East Area Adult Education Center, a public school for grown-ups, more than 20 years ago.

Wray would help students with their higher-level math classes, while Esther, a former school teacher, would work with students in reading and math as a substitute and volunteer. 

And so it went for two decades for the high school sweethearts, who began going steady when they were 16 at Fort Lauderdale High School. They married after she finished at Florida State University, and she taught school for a few years while he attended medical school at Emory University in Atlanta. He landed a job in 1964 as an internist at Gessler Clinic in Winter Haven. Three children came along – Larry, Ann and Stanley – and eventually four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Tri-C wins award for equity in nursing education

Cuyahoga Community College’s nursing program is being honored with an award from the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program and the Siemens Foundation.

The program is the recipient of the Excellence and Equity in Community College STEM Award. The award recognizes “outstanding preparation and training for high-demand jobs in advanced manufacturing, energy, health care or information technology,” as well as intentional support of underrepresented populations in those STEM fields, a news release stated. Eight programs across the country are receiving the award.

“Serving those who are underresourced and underrepresented in higher education stands as a priority for Cuyahoga Community College and its Nursing Center of Excellence,” Tri-C president Alex Johnson said in the release. “We strive to remove barriers and open opportunities, creating pathways to higher-income jobs and a stable future for those who need it most.”

Linden, New Jersey’s School 5 wins US Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon

LINDEN, New Jersey (WABC) — A school in New Jersey has been awarded a national distinction.

The motto at School 5 in Linden is “Where dreams come alive.”

Thursday, the U.S. Department of Education awarded the school its prestigious Blue Ribbon, a recognition of academic excellence.

When the pandemic hit, classrooms were left empty across the country. Kids were going to school from home, but obviously kids and teachers from School 5 in Linden didn’t let a virus derail the hefty goal that they’d set for themselves.
