Two candidates — both of whom have previous experience on education boards — are seeking to fill the District 2 seat on the Nevada System of Higher Education’s Board of Regents.
Lois Tarkanian and Bret Whipple are running in the Nov. 3 general election. The race didn’t appear on the primary ballot in June because they were the only two candidates, after a third contender, Bonnie McDaniel, withdrew from the race.
Trevor Hayes — who has been on the board since 2014 and isn’t seeking reelection — currently occupies the seat, which includes parts of Las Vegas.
Regents govern Nevada’s public higher education system and its eight schools, including UNLV and UNR, Nevada State College, four community colleges and Desert Research Institute. Those schools serve more than 100,000 students.
Tarkanian served for 14 years on the Las Vegas City Council until June 2019. She was also previously a Clark County
