Special Olympics Maine recognizes Bath high school for inclusive program

BATH — It’s the last minute of the final game for Morse High School’s unified basketball team, which boasts an equal number of students with and without disabilities. Shots are taken, missed, and taken again as the clock ticks down until the buzzer sounds and every player, coach and spectator erupts into cheers, applause and congratulations. Who wins isn’t remembered, but the sense of acceptance every student feels will last a lifetime.

Inclusive playground opens at McBride Elementary; honors former special education teacher Nick Hostler

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – A new all-inclusive playground is open at McBride Elementary. And it’s named Mr. Nick’s playground in honor of former special education teacher, Nick Hostler.

Nick Hostler’s dream as a special education teacher started out with an inclusive swing for his students.

“He shared very heartfelt concerns that involved the word play,” Mary Kay Hostler, Nick’s mother, says. “We now stand near the ground, where all children of all abilities can play together.”

After Nick died unexpectedly of a heart attack over two years ago, his parents decided to make his dream a reality. Rather than just a swing, Mr. Nick’s is now an inclusive playground with equipment for kids of all abilities.

New research center focuses on inclusive STEM education

A new ASU research center was created this year to help forge a more inclusive STEM education for students.

The Research For Inclusive STEM Education Center aims to achieve that goal through the undergraduate experience within science, technology, engineering and math. 

The center examines inequities within classrooms, research labs and learning environments to create interventions. RISE looks at identities beyond race and gender within STEM education.

Sara Brownell, associate professor in the School of Life Sciences and director of RISE, said people have different experiences in the classroom based on their identity, but the difference should not be attributed to the identity.
