Locations : Salon's spooky spirit just hair-raising!

• Story taken from the Evening News, 11 September 2003.

A restless spirit has been making life at a busy salon a hair-raising experience.

Staff at Mulberrys hairdressers in Bells Road, Gorleston, claim they have had to put up with the spook for more than a decade. They have even drafted in the help of a local ghostbuster but, according to owner Tony Lewis, the ghoul has refused to stop haunting them.

Mr Lewis, who has run the business for 10 years, said the 150-year-old building had a "very peculiar presence", even though the disturbances had become less frequent. He said: "A new girl started working in the shop a while ago and had an odd experience. "A door slammed in her face and wouldn't allow her into a room. "Lots of people believe they can see things and feel things."

After dozens of incidents spanning several years, Mr Lewis contacted local firm Paranormal Dimensions in the hope they could come up with an explanation. And Neil Fellowes, co-founder of the Gorleston-based investigators, claims to have recorded poltergeist activity, temperature fluctuations
and unexplained electro-magnetic fields roaming the building.

He said: "We brought in a medium who found one spirit — a fisherman who originally lived in the building. "Apparently he was upset by the number of young ladies occupying the
upstairs of his old home."

The mysterious happenings have caught the attention of an Anglia TV documentary crew who have included Mulberrys in a programme about the region's most haunted buildings.

Ghostly Tales of the Unexpected starts tonight at 11.30pm. The five-part series has unearthed spooky goings-on in the unlikeliest of places, including a near-new council house near Wroxham.

Debbie and Tony Pressley have lived in their Church Lane home in Ashmanaugh for seven years. Mr Pressley, a 49-year-old lorry driver, said they knew something was
wrong the moment they moved in to the house. He said: "The first night we moved in, I was lying in bed convinced
someone was staring directly in my face. "Neither of us slept well and my wife said the next morning she
experienced exactly the same thing." The Pressleys have also reported seeing strange shadows moving across
the room, and hearing a ghostly female voice.

The Evening News contacted North Norfolk District Council today to ask if any tenants had previously complained about the property, but it said it had had no reports of any hauntings. Tony Knowles, a spokesman for North Norfolk District Council, said: "As far as we can tell, it's not a problem which has been brought to our attention. "We have had no complaints from previous residents."

The programme took months of research and filming and has left its makers in no doubt the ghost stories are true.
Producer Richard Kennan said: "It's simple — either all of the contributors conspired together to fool us in an outrageous hoax, they are all barking mad, or what they say is true. "For the team, sceptical or not, the third option has become the only option."

It is not the first time the Evening News has reported ghostly goings-on in Gorleston. In June we revealed how Paranormal Dimensions investigated a series of terrifying happenings at the 17th Century White Horse pub in Great
Yarmouth. The investigators were called in after reports of flying frozen steaks, falling pint glasses and a self-propelled pool table ball. The owners have put the property on the market but have had no interested takers so far.
