Hi everyone, I'm new on this website...
I'm a Canadian but I have lived in the UK in the past. I am a former student of the University of Wales. During my time there I attended a conference at Gregynog Hall, in Montgomeryshire one weekend. Gregynog is a big, Tudor-style manor house built about 150 years ago and was donated to the University of Wales in the 60's by Miss Margaret Davies. Anyway, while at the conference I swear I encountered a ghost or something supernatural. I didn't see anything but I definitely felt and heard something. I'm a pretty sceptical guy, and I still wonder maybe if my mind was playing tricks on me, after all it is a pretty big, spooky place and that was definitely on my mind, plus I was all alone. But at the same time...I remember getting so freaked out that I ran away down the hall so fast after it happened, and the hair on the back of my neck was standing on end (I know it sounds cliched but its true). Normally, I would have just shrugged it off if I though it was my mind going off on me...but the experience seemed so real that I was still shaking a good 6 hours after it happened and I had long since left the hall and returned to Aberystwyth. I told the story to my girlfriend and some others and they all kind of laughed and didn't take it seriously. But when I mentioned it to one friend, he said that some people in his class who had been there before on a conference had also had strange experiences there.
Anyway, to get to the point...I have been trying to find info on Gregynog and any ghosts/hauntings there...but can't find anything. Can someone shed some light on this? Has anyone heard of Gregynog, and/or any ghost stories about the place?
Thanks. Sorry for the long post.

Hello again! Found this history of the place but I couldn't see anything particularly about ghosts. http://www.hewit.com/sd1-greg.htm

Thanks for that history Sarah JC, the only ting I found on that page related to hauntings is this brief statement:
"In addition to the grant this unique position also provides accommodation in the main hall where visiting two day conferences are mostly welcome guests (but not always!) and can provide interesting interludes to some quiet or solitary times when the hall is empty. It is said there are two ghosts (of a friendly nature) and whilst well meaning members of staff have kindly taken me into their confidence I take cold comfort in the knowledge that only one of the them was invented!"
It's not much buit I guess its a start.
As to what I felt and heard, I didn't want to get into it because I felt it was a long stroy. Basically, I had forgotton my wallet in one of the conference rooms. It was around supper time and eveyone was in the cafeteria eating. So I walked back to the conference room to get my wallet. Well, when I got there, I swore I could hear voices, particularly a women's voice coming from somewhere...I don't know where though. I initially thought that maybe there was still a lecture going on in one of the other rooms. But when I started to head back I peeked into the room across the hall (it appeared to be some kind of sitting room/reading room) and there was no one in there...and as I walked down the hall I realized that all the rooms were empty. Well that's when I really started to freak out cause I swore I had heard voices. Anyway, right at that moment...as I walked down the hall, this was right in front of that sitting room...I heard like a whispery voice and some laughter (man I still get scared when I talk about this) behind me, sounded like it came from the sitting room. Anyway, it was the strangest feeling because a cold wind kind of ran across my back along with the whispering and laughing. To me, for some reason I got the feeling that someone was playing a trick on me, and I could swear it sounds like a little girl laughing or something. Anyway, as soon as that happened I literally just ran as fast as I could all the way back to the cafeteria...I didn't even look back once.
Thats it...sorry again for the long one.

Hi Canaghost,
Wow - that's certainly a scary experience! I too would have run as fast as possible to get away from the happenings. The house I live in has at least one spirit, maybe two, but I have grown used to this, and if I hear anything odd I try to analyze rather than panic, but in a strange location I think panic and fear would hit roughly a nanosecond before my brain told my legs to RUN!
Thank you for sharing your experience with us all - it was very interesting as well as scary! Don't worry about posts - there have been longer ones on here!
:-)

Hi Canaghost, welcome to the site.
thanks for sharing your experience, it made interesting reading.
It certainly sounds very frightening and I feel I would have felt and reacted just the same as you did - except I may have been even more scared!
I'm sorry I don't know anything about the place.
As I read your story I was trying to think of a rational explanation and I wondered if it was possible a radio or television may have been switched on in one of the rooms? When a radio I had once was breaking down, the sound would come and go abruptly.
best wishes
Mysty

Hi all, I was part of an investigation group that went into Gregynog (The first and only). I had worked there for 5 years a while before, and had a few personal experiences and heard tales, so I pushed for us to get in there. it was agreed after a meeting with the general manager, and the night was pretty eventful. Myself and three others split from this group a few months later and formed our own group. Sorry I dont know if I can mention our group website or if it is classed as advertising (we are a totally non profit group, and my report is on our site because the four of us that were ousted from the original group made up the second team on the investigation. anyway about three months after we went in, we heard that Most Haunted were going to do a show there. I personally contacted Antix (MH's production company in chester) to see if I could be of any help in pointing them to interesting areas (gregynog is huge) I was told in no uncertain terms that they would do their own thing while there. fair enough i thought. it has been announced that the airing of the gregynog episode will be next wednesday 7/6/10 it will be interesting to see if there are correlations between my report and the MH findings.

Thanks bryan, the site is still new'ish and we are still tweaking it here and there, but its coming on quite nicely. Yeah, Gregynog is one of the hidden beauty's of wales (lots of locals don't even know its there) the inside is pretty amazing too, and quite a large area to investigate (there are over 40 guest rooms alone never mind the conference rooms and the communal areas) we would like to get back in there at some stage, there were lots of areas that we thought were worthy of investigation, but after 5 hours we just ran out of time. lets see what cobblers the Most Haunted team make of it on tonights show LOL.

Yeah bryan, they did. although some of the 'facts' didnt quite fit in with the facts that the locals know. they investigated room 7, but anybody in the know, knows it is room 8 that is most active. also they investigated the cellar bar area, but were in a different corridor to us, even though they were 'supposedly' picking up the same things as us. definate question marks on pre-prepared knowledge. oh well, it was worth watching though.

Yeah sounds to me like theyve ripped off the local knowledge and transposed it. I have heard that is what happened with The Goldne Fleece investigation at York as well ; the team literally transposed stories from The Black Swan just half a mile up the road and went with half of them as well! lol.
So long as you can see that you did a better job you should be happy mate!
